K. Guru Gowrappan
Guru Gowrappan is responsible for growing Alibaba’s international markets (with initial focus on Southeast Asia and India).
Guru is also responsible for international product and BD Strategy, which includes bringing all Alibaba Group products as one, cohesive strategy and execution unit to key markets. More recently he helped drive an investment of some US$1 billion in India’s payments and ecommerce sector, and a similar amount in Alibaba’s Lazada subsidiary.
Before joining Alibaba, Guru was Chief Operating Officer with mobile search engine Quixey where he led product, business and marketing roles and played a key part in global development and financial strategy.
Guru has 15+ years’ experience in the Internet industry. He formerly worked as COO for growth/emerging initiatives at social gaming company Zynga, where he also served as Head of Zynga Japan and drove the company’s IPO process. Previously Guru worked at Overture, where he helped define the multi-billion dollar search marketing industry. When Yahoo acquired Overture he held many leadership roles, including Global Head of Product, Program Management and Operations.
Guru is a co-founder of two Indian start-ups and an active angel investor and adviser through his early-stage fund Mantra Partners.
